University

CReNIEO offers the Ph.D programme of University of Madras and Bharathidasan University. Ph.D studies are oriented to the challenges faced by developing countries, such as social justice, quality of life, environmental concerns, both at the macro and micro levels. International Economics is a specialty research area at CReNIEO.

 

CReNIEO also offers the M.Phil programme in Economics of University of Madras. Research Methodology and Economics theory as adopted by the University’s Department of Economics are followed for paper I and II at CReNIEO, however paper III and Dissertations are in the exclusive area of Environmental Economics, introduced perhaps for the first time in any Indian University at the M.Phil level.

University of Madras - Ph.D. Programme

Dr. S.N.Nageswara Rao had joined CReNIEO as faculty, Department of History.

Four candidates registered for Ph.D. (History) under the guideship of Dr. Bernard D’ Sami.

The renewal of the affiliation for Ph.D studies, in Economics, Sociology, and History was awarded by the University of Madras for the period 18/11/2015 to 17/11/2016.  Dr. Bernard D’ Sami, (History) Dr. Anbones Raj (Sociology) were the guides.

Dr. Jothi Sivaganam and Dr. Karuppiah of the University of Madras conducted an inspection at Muttukadu to renew the affiliation for Ph.D. studies in Economics, Sociology, and History. Dr. Bernard D’ Sami, (History) Dr. Anbones Raj (Sociology) were invited along with CReNIEO board members.

Ph.D. Ms. N. Malathi, has submitted her Ph. D. thesis to the University of Madras. Her thesis is on Economic Growth in Tami Nadu Since 1990 in two districts – An analysis of Human Development indicators”. Prof. M. Naganathan was her supervisor.

Renewal for conducting Ph.D. studies received.

University of Madras Inspection:
An inspection was carried out by the University of Madras at the Muttukadu campus for renewal of Ph.D. studies in History and Sociology. The required fee of Rs. 75,000 for renewal and confirmation of research was paid to the University.

Ph.D. Ms. O. Maanvizhi who had registered for Ph.D. in Economics (Full time) in the University of Madras under the guidance of Dr. P. Govindarajan appeared for her viva and was awarded her Ph.D. The viva was held on 5.3.2010. Dr. R. Rajkumar, Prof. of Economics, I.D.E University was the external examiner. It was highly commended. Her thesis was on “Study on Air pollution in Chennai city with special reference to vehicular pollution 1995 to 2006”

Environmental Studies

Focus on environment adds a significant dimension to any study of development. CReNIEO lays immense emphasis on environmental studies. CReNIEO has prepared a curriculum on M.A. in Environmental Economics, which has been approved by University of Madras. CReNIEO has also prepared a curriculum for M.Phil in Environmental Economics which is also approved by University of Madras.

Women Studies

Women’s movement has become one of the significant forces for social change as an international phenomenon. Indian women’s movement has played and continues to play a pivotal role in Indian society. CReNIEO encourages study of this movement, as well as conducts seminars for women’s involvement in development. CReNIEO promotes both research and action, related to women’s participation in the life and growth of the society.

Education

In July 1988, CReNIEO started the Pulicat National Matriculaion School, with LKG to third standard, with the prime objective of imparting formal education for the long-term development of the underprivileged rural communities.

 

The aim of the school is to empower fisherfolk and other rural communities around Pulicat through education. The medium of instruction is English. Most of the children are first generation learners.

 

For the academic year of 2022-2023,  the school has a total of 792 children, both boys and girls with standards from LKG to X.  79% of the children are from the fisherfolk community.

 

The school has been granted recognition by the Directorate of School Education, Tamil Nadu and follows the Tamil Nadu Government’s State Board Samacheer Kalvi syllabus with special subjects related to Environment, Value Education, life skills education, and Computer education.

True education must correspond to the surrounding circumstances or it is not a healthy growth.

Peter Meierle Children Education Fund and Scholarships: Peter Meierle, his family & friends made a contribution to assist the underprivileged and needy school students. 10 scholarships and learning material make a contribution for Projector, Mic set, Compact Disk and sports material were donated in 2019-20.
  1. Two more class rooms were added in 2019-2020.

The Pulicat National Matriculation School (PNMS): The total strength of the school for the academic year 2019-20 is 791 with 437 boys and 354 girls.  46 students appeared for the 10th Std Tamil Nadu Board Examination in 2019 and all the 46 passed with good marks.

  1. 25 new backrest benches and desks were added for the benefit of the students.  A new computer lab and a classroom was also constructed.

Peter Meierle Children Education Fund and Scholarships:  Peter Meierle, his family & friends made a contribution to assist the underprivileged and needy school students.  Three scholarships, three computers and four backrest benches were donated to the school this year.

Pulicat National Matriculation School (PNMS):

  1. In the March 2016 State Board examinations all the 44 students of 10th standard passed with high marks.
  2. Centum 2 in Maths and 3 in Social Sciences. Aggregate of 400 marks and above was scored by 29 students.
  3. As per the government norms fee increased by 10 % for 2016-2017.
  4. Under the RTE Act the government reimbursed fees directly to parent’s accounts for 15 SC/ST, L.K.G students for the year 2015 -2016.
  5. Renewal of Recognition certificate of school was received in March 2016.

Indian Institute of Management–Bangalore- Senior Executive Programme:
Two of our staff Mr. Premchandran and Mr. Meersa underwent an Executive management training programme at IIM-B from 12 th to 16 th May. This programme was sponsored by the Fair Climate Network. This is for setting up Rural Community Producer units for local products and for establishing carbon trading activities.

Living Lakes Conference, Nanchang, China,
Mrs. Premanjali Rao between 17 th and 19 th in November 2014 attended this conference at Nanchang China and made a presentation on Pulicat Lake. The Theme was on “Lakes in densely populated regions Balance between people and nature.”

The Pulicat National Matriculation School (PNMS):
In the March 2015 State Board exams all the 33 students of 10th standard passed with high marks with 4 centum in Science and 2 in Social Science. As per the government norms fees were increased by 10 %.

Water Conservation and Recycling: Interactive meeting with Dr. Paul Appasamy
Dr. Paul Appasamy former Vice Chancellor, Karunaya University, Coimbatore and currently Honorary Professor of Economics at Madras School of Economics, addressed to the Pulicat School students on rainfall, groundwater recharge, recycling of water, reverse osmosis, water needs, conservation of water and careers in future.

Peter Meierle Children Education Aid Fund- Scholarships and school benches with backrest.
From Peter Meierle and friends scholarship endowment, an amount of Rs. 11,000 from the interest was utilized for 11 children coming from poor back grounds and especially for those who had three or more children studying. A similar amount will be available next year. Peter Meierle and friends contributed for 13 benches with back rest earlier this year.

On 19 th July 2015 on the occasion of Bharathiar Memorial Day, Vellammal Matriculation School organized a sport meet at Andarkuppamum where Junior Girls (VI & VII) won the Zonal Title in Kabbadi and came up as runners up in shuttle – singles and doubles.

Pulicat National Matriculation School (PNMS):
In the March 2014 State Board exams all the 33 students of 10th standard passed with high marks with achievement of 4 centum in science and 2 in social science. Negotiations are underway with Infosys representative for the supply of computers for the school along with service and maintenance contract.

Mangroves-Internal Project Review Meeting:
On 30 th and 31 st of May 2014, internationally acclaimed Mangrove expert Dr. Kathiresan Head of the Department of Marine Sciences, Annamalai University along with marine scientist Dr. Nammalwar of Anna University and Dr. Jayabalan of Tamil University Thanjavur visited our mangrove resonation programme and reviewed the progress and appreciated our efforts with the Global Nature Fund (GNF) restoration Programme and gave some valuable suggestion for up scaling the efforts.

The Pulicat National Matriculation School (PNMS):
In March 2013 State Board examination for 10th standard 30 students (13 boys 17 girls) from the School appeared and all of them passed most of them by securing 80 % and above marks. The school topper is a girl with 96%.  8 students secured centum marks in Science and 1 student in Mathematics.

The Correspondent Ms. Premanjali Rao and the Headmaster Mr. Seralanathan appeared before the Tamil Nadu Fee Determination Committee, and they have communicated the fees to be charged for the year 2013-2015 with 10 % increase every year for next three years.

A staircase has been completed and the toilets for girls have been put up.  A donation of Rs. 1, 15,000 was received from Peter Meierle and Carina for construction of toilets especially for girls.

The school has completed 25 years and last year in November we had a get together of the first two batches of our 10th standard students, and most of them are doing extremely well. Prof. Nagarajan spoke on the value of education and future of education for Pulicat Children. The PTA has requested if  a bust size statute of Dr. K. Rajaratnam could be is installed in the school and they are also willing to contribute.

For the first time a separate audit has been completed for the School funds by J. K. Reddy & Co.

On 7th October the CReNIEO ethical committee had its first meeting under the Chairmanship of Prof. Ambrose, Head of the Department of Legal Studies, University of Madras.

On the same day the CReNIEO doctoral committee met under the chairmanship of Prof. D. Sundram.

Internship:
In June –July 2011 a student Ms. Kugila Dewi from University of Malaysia did her internship on SHGs in Pulicat.

A total number of 687 Children enrolled for the academic year 2011-2012 of which 35, students appeared for the 10th Std Matriculation Examinations in March 2012 and all of them passed. The TN government prescribed fee is charged. More furniture was added with the school funds as well as with a one lakh received donation from Kristin Steger, Professor at IIT Chennai.  A school management committee and safety measures committee was formed.

598 Children are enrolled in our school for the academic year 2010-11. 21 students appeared for the 10th Std matriculation examinations in March 2010 and all of them passed, 20 of them getting first class and one of them securing a second class.

Peter Meierle Children Education Fund and Scholarships: Peter Meierle, his family & friends made a contribution to assist the underprivileged and needy school students. 10 scholarships and learning material make a contribution for Projector, Mic set, Compact Disk and sports material were donated in 2019-20.
  1. Two more class rooms were added in 2019-2020.

The Pulicat National Matriculation School (PNMS): The total strength of the school for the academic year 2019-20 is 791 with 437 boys and 354 girls.  46 students appeared for the 10th Std Tamil Nadu Board Examination in 2019 and all the 46 passed with good marks.

  1. 25 new backrest benches and desks were added for the benefit of the students.  A new computer lab and a classroom was also constructed.

Peter Meierle Children Education Fund and Scholarships:  Peter Meierle, his family & friends made a contribution to assist the underprivileged and needy school students.  Three scholarships, three computers and four backrest benches were donated to the school this year.

Pulicat National Matriculation School (PNMS):

  1. In the March 2016 State Board examinations all the 44 students of 10th standard passed with high marks.
  2. Centum 2 in Maths and 3 in Social Sciences. Aggregate of 400 marks and above was scored by 29 students.
  3. As per the government norms fee increased by 10 % for 2016-2017.
  4. Under the RTE Act the government reimbursed fees directly to parent’s accounts for 15 SC/ST, L.K.G students for the year 2015 -2016.
  5. Renewal of Recognition certificate of school was received in March 2016.

Indian Institute of Management–Bangalore- Senior Executive Programme:
Two of our staff Mr. Premchandran and Mr. Meersa underwent an Executive management training programme at IIM-B from 12 th to 16 th May. This programme was sponsored by the Fair Climate Network. This is for setting up Rural Community Producer units for local products and for establishing carbon trading activities.

Living Lakes Conference, Nanchang, China,
Mrs. Premanjali Rao between 17 th and 19 th in November 2014 attended this conference at Nanchang China and made a presentation on Pulicat Lake. The Theme was on “Lakes in densely populated regions Balance between people and nature.”

Water Conservation and Recycling: Interactive meeting with Dr. Paul Appasamy
Dr. Paul Appasamy former Vice Chancellor, Karunaya University, Coimbatore and currently Honorary Professor of Economics at Madras School of Economics, addressed to the Pulicat School students on rainfall, groundwater recharge, recycling of water, reverse osmosis, water needs, conservation of water and careers in future.

Peter Meierle Children Education Aid Fund- Scholarships and school benches with backrest.
From Peter Meierle and friends scholarship endowment, an amount of Rs. 11,000 from the interest was utilized for 11 children coming from poor back grounds and especially for those who had three or more children studying. A similar amount will be available next year. Peter Meierle and friends contributed for 13 benches with back rest earlier this year.

Rural Development and Management (RDM)

CReNIEO designed and conducted a one-year diploma course in Rural Development and Management (RDM) for potential leaders in rural development at the executive level. Practically oriented, the course enabled students to realistically conceptualize, plan and initiate sustainable development programmes for rural India. The course was for the NGOs from India as well as for overseas students.

 

The two-year course was launched in 1991, and later was revised to a one-year duration from the academic year 2001-2002. The course was also offered in a modular form especially for overseas students. Eighty-four development leaders from different States of India who hold important positions in organizations engaged in grassroots development work; have undergone the training.

 

Twenty-four overseas students from USA, Japan, Sweden, Norway and Germany have done modular courses and thirty overseas students have undergone short-term courses.

RDM Project Work

All students of the Rural Development and Management (RDM) course undertook an issue based field study as part of their course. The studies were supervised by the Director and CReNIEO faculty.

International Exchange Programmes

Since the early 1990s, CReNIEO has been a facilitator of exchange programmes for students of American Universities, as well as, a few Norwegian and German Colleges. Students and faculty members spend close to three months in the Rural Development and Management (RDM) course, visiting various projects and are oriented to various socio-cultural dimensions, which are unique to India. For field exposure, the students were allocated in various rural development projects of CReNIEO, as well other NGOs in different parts of the country.

 

In August 2000, a voluntary organisation in Japan called SOMNEED organised a one-month training programme for 14 Japanese students on rural development and management.

 

The students were placed in the field at Koraput and Pulicat.

 

In January 2004, short exposure programmes were conducted for faculty members from different colleges from Canada.

 

During 2002-2003, a student from Newcastle University in the UK did a research study of the Pulicat Lake for her Ph.D.

 

During 2008-2010, delegates from the European Union (EU) attended the Nature Summer Camp programme at Pulicat.

 

In 2009, two volunteers from Germany worked for three months in the Pulicat project.
